Since 1990, Mannheim University of Applied Sciences has been cooperating with the Institut National Polytechnique de Lorraine (Nancy; today: Université de Lorraine) and organises German-French study programmes in Process Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering with the respective Grandes Ecoles in Nancy, France.
Students can gain access to these degree programmes after completing the pre-bachelor studies at the University of Applied Sciences (i.e. interested students apply for the national bachelor course in the above-mentioned disciplines).
[Applications for the German-French study programmes must be submitted during the third or fourth semester at the German-French Study Center (Deutsch-Französisches Zentrum).]
The German-French binational studies start with the 5th semester, which is spent at the French partner Grandes Ecoles. These are the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Industries Chimiques (ENSIC) for Process and Chemical Engineering, and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Nancy for Mechanical Engineering.
After this semester, the 6th semester is a practical study term that has to be carried out as an industrial internship; in French industry for German students, and in German industry for French students. The 7th semester is spent at Mannheim University of Applied Sciences. French and German students take part in the respective lectures and laboratory exercises on the curriculum, and have to write their bachelor’s thesis at the same time.
For admission to the French-German master’s courses, a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 (“good”) is required.
The master’s courses start at Mannheim University of Applied Sciences (1st semester), then the binational students continue their studies at their respective French Grandes Ecoles (2nd semester), and the third master’s semester must be carried out in industry, where the master’s thesis is prepared. As a general rule, students are not allowed to spend this semester in their home country. Countries other than France and Germany may be chosen for completing the master’s thesis.
Mannheim University of Applied Sciences is a member university of the German-French University (Deutsch-Französische Hochschule/Université Franco-Allemande DFH/UFA Saarbrücken). The French-German study programmes are supported and subsidised by the DFH/UFA, and the enrolled students are entitled to scholarships during their study periods abroad.
