Bachelor of Science

Hochschule Mannheim - Mannheim University of Applied Sciences is offering international and German students the opportunity to gain the internationally-recognised Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Automation Technology degree as part of the Engineering Sciences international study programme. The degree is normally awarded after a seven-semester course of study comprising 210 credits.

Studies start in the September before the first semester as a three-week language, culture and orientation programme. During the first two semesters, lectures and lab courses are held exclusively in English. Language instruction - German for students from overseas and English for German-speaking students - is an integral part of the degree programme. In addition, all-day language classes in two or three-week sessions take place in the semester breaks.

The fifth semester is set aside for a six-month work experience term (internship) in industry. During the last year lectures focus on special automation technology topics. In the last semester at the university, the student embarks on an independent project to fulfil the requirement of the degree Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Automation Technology.

The Automation Technology programme was accredited in June 2004 by ASIIN, the German governmental body responsible for the accreditation of university information technology, science and maths courses.

The programme starts every winter semester (in September).

 The University also offers a Master of Science programme in Automation and Energy Systems.

Automation Technology is based on the principles of electrical engineering. The goal is to partially or totally control automated technical processes. The core topics are:

  • modelling, analysis and simulation of technical processes,
  • measurement and instrumentation,
  • feedback control,
  • programmable controls and microprocessors,
  • industrial information technology,
  • computing and data processing.

In order to describe the processes to be automated, different methods of control engineering are usually employed, e.g. identification of parameters, state estimation. Control algorithms are tested by PC-based simulations before they are implemented onto the real process.

Sensors and actuators as well as different kinds of automation systems are basic tools for the engineering of automated machines and plants. One of the main fields of an automation engineer is to design automation systems from a collection of single components of different distributors. In this connection the design of human machine interfaces (HMI) is a key for a successful automation concept because processes must be visualised, supervised and sometimes even manipulated by an operator.

A fundamental aspect of automation technology is the application of computer science and information technology to industrial processes. This is used for programming control systems such as programmable logic controllers (PLC), microprocessors (µC) and digital signal processors (DSP) which are currently programmed in object-oriented languages. Communication networks (fieldbus systems, local area networks, intranet and internet) distribute these systems with the required data under consideration of real-time constraints. Using the interfaces of modern computer systems (e.g. OLE for process control) an integration of automation systems at different levels of factory control is possible, e.g. by employing enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems such as SAP R3. An engineer in the area of automation technology increasingly has to deal with principles and applications in the fields of information technology, computer science and business administration.

The coursework includes:

  • science and engineering lectures 
  • lab courses in small groups and tutor-led discussion seminars
  • English or German language instruction
  • additional courses focusing on developing key skills
  • a structured term of work experience during the fifth semester
  • one semester dedicated to working on an independent project 
  • a BSc thesis describing the results of this project
  • a formal presentation of these results in a colloquium

Students with English as their native or dominant language are advised to spend the entire course of study in Germany. All other students are required to spend at least half a year abroad, preferably in an English-speaking country.

During the first three semesters as well as during the semester holidays students receive intensive language training. After the third semester students are expected to pass an official language examination.
