Discover Mannheim

Mannheim offers a diverse urban environment shaped by industry, culture, history and international exchange.

With a cosmopolitan population of 325,000 inhabitants, Mannheim is the second largest city in the state of Baden-Württemberg and situated at the heart of the flourishing Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region.

The following sections provide an overview of key aspects of the city and its surroundings that influence everyday student life. Explore what makes Mannheim a unique place to live, learn and build your future.

The city of Mannheim is just as renowned for art and culture as it is for technical innovations. Major museums, cultural institutions, performance venues and concert arenas offer a huge variety of actiivities. Despite great destruction during World War II, it still hosts some fine baroque and jugendstil buildings. Mozart and Schiller spent part of their lives here.

Mannheim features the National Theatre, famous for the premiere of Schiller’s The Robbers in 1782. NTM is one of the largest and oldest municipal repertory theatres in Germany. It stages award-winning theatre productions, numerous world premières and German premières across its four artistic divisions – opera, drama, dance and youth theatre.

The Kunsthalle Mannheim is one of the most important museums of classical modernism and contemporary art. Its profile is marked by key works of painting from Édouard Manet to Francis Bacon as well as an outstanding collection of sculpture from modernism to contemporary art.

Urban art: The open urban art gallery “STADT.WAND.KUNST” transforms grey walls into a walk-through museum. Every summer, national and international street artists invite you to be a witness of the emergence of impressive works of art on their respective house wall, created under the auspices of “STADT.WAND.KUNST”. They create true works of urban art on house surfaces spread over several storeys.

The landscape around Mannheim is another of its charms, situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar rivers and within easy reach of the Odenwald forest and the vineyards of the Palatinate.

The “Luisenpark” also draws nature lovers to Mannheim. Marvel at artfully arranged flowerbeds, discover animal worlds, experience culture or simply relax and unwind - every day in Luisenpark is a short holiday. The “Herzogenriedpark” invites families, open-air sports fans and people looking for peace and quiet to countless activities in 21 hectares of space.

Käfertal forest is Baden-Württemberg´s most visited peri-urban forest. Observe bison, deer, boars and mouflons in spacious wildlife enclosures or marvel at owls, peacocks and other birds in the Vogelpark. Enjoy a round of minigolf or visit the football pitch and playground for guaranteed fun.

The extensive “Waldpark” is located directly on the Rhine - ten minutes walking distance from TH Mannheim campus. It is criss-crossed by many paths and hiking routes. Here, you will discover meadow landscapes, water- ways and abundant greenery to enjoy on a long, pleasant stroll. The park flows directly into one of the most significant river-meadow protected areas on the Upper Rhine, the “Reißinsel”. Together, the two areas provide living space for many domestic plants and rare animals, which you can discover and admire on your stroll.

Sports: There are lots of sports opportunities in Mannheim, from jogging along the river or doing Yoga in the Park to climbing in a gym. During the summer months, the city of Mannheim organizes the free-of-charge sports series “Sport im Park”.

Students can participate in university sports or join one of the numerous sports clubs in the city.

Sustainability: The bike is a common way to get around in the city, next to a network of tram and bus connections.

For over 150 years, Mannheim has stood for the development and growth of competitive, innovative companies from diverse economic sectors. This industry diversity is a key reason for the city's sustained positive development and performance as a business location.
