Admission exchange students
You are studying at one of our partner universities worldwide and would like to spend one or two semesters in Mannheim and you intend to have your credits transferred back home?
Please view the information below on how you can become an exchange student at Hochschule Mannheim.
Once you have been admitted, check out the detailes information we offer at Studying with us, for example about courses for exchange students, housing, costs and scholarships.
We are looking forward to seeing you here.
First, you need a nomination from your home institution. This is a requirement for obtaining the exchange student status – especially for Erasmus+ scholarships and other fixed programmes. Please contact the responsible office at your home university for information regarding the nomination process.
Unfortunately, we cannot admit so-called free-movers.
You will receive a link for an online application. During the application, the following documents have to be uploaded:
- Curriculum vitae
- Letter of motivation
- Transcript of records
- Proof of knowledge of German, if you are planning to take courses taught in German and/or proof of knowledge of English, if you are planning to take courses taught in English.
- Learning Agreement
If you need help during the online application, please consult the "How-to" manual provided here.
- 31st of May: Application for Winter Semester (beginning of September until mid February)
- 15th of November: Application for Summer Semester (mid March until mid July)
You have to prove your language skills in the application. Exchange students should have EITHER a sufficient command of German OR a sound knowledge of English, depending on the language of the courses they plan to take.
German skills: Most of the courses at Mannheim University of Applied Sciences are taught in German. If you want to attend courses taught in German during your stay at HSMA, you should have at least language skills at level B1 or B2 (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
English skills: If you want to take courses taught in English during your stay at HSMA (e.g. in the international semester of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering), we need proof of your English skills. You should have at least language skills at level B1 or B2 (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
For more information on our German language courses, see this site.
If your application has been accepted, you will receive all the necessary information about housing, health insurance, etc.
We will send you our Welcome Guide for international students, which will help you prepare for the semester abroad and also guide you during your studies.
You can also have a look at the pages Studying with us to get an overview of what awaits you here.
In order to be able to study as an Erasmus+ student at the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences, your home university must have a bilateral Erasmus+ agreement with our university.
After your application has been accepted, the Erasmus coordinator of Hochschule Mannheim will get in touch with you regarding all neccessary steps and documents.

In most cases, the best route is to apply for a student applicant visa during the selection process instead of first waiting for admission! Otherwise you may risk losing your place because there is usually not enough time between the admission period and the start of the semester.
