Programmes degree-seeking students

Bachelor's degree programmes

As an international applicant for a regular bachelor’s degree programme at a Fachhochschule (University of Applied Sciences) in the state of Baden-Württemberg, you first need to contact the Studienkolleg Konstanz  Center for International Students. The Center will validate your international records and issue the required certificate of access to higher education needed for your application. The Studienkolleg Konstanz also checks whether your command of the German language is sufficient for attending courses with German as the primary language of instruction.

As soon as you have obtained the certificate of access to higher education from the Studienkolleg Konstanz as well as the proof of your German language skills (DSH or equivalent), you can apply online for your preferred bachelor’s degree programme.

Master's degree programmes

As an international applicant for a regular master’s degree programme at Mannheim University of Applied Sciences you should send your application as required by the Department offering your chosen course. The respective application deadline and language requirements must be observed.

If you feel comfortable in German you can try and take the free orientation test! (in German)

Semester contribution:

  • All students at Hochschule Mannheim pay a semester contribution each semester.
  • In the winter semester 2023, the semester contribution is € 202.80 and consists of the Studierendenwerks fee, the administration fee and the student union fee.

Tuition fees:

  • Students from the EU and the EEA, or international students who obtained their Abitur or equivalent in Germany, are not required to pay tuition fees.
  • In addition to the semester contribution, the higher education institutions of Baden-Württemberg charge tuition fees for international degree-seeking students as well as for students pursuing a second degree in accordance with the act on fees in higher education of the Land of Baden-Württemberg (LHGebG). International students from countries outside of the EU/EEA are required to pay a tuition fee of 1,500 euros per semester. There are certain cases, where tuition fee can be waived - please check here.
  • Students who were already enrolled at a higher education institution in Baden-Württemberg before the fall semester 2017/18 do not have to pay tuition fees. They can complete their studies under the conditions that applied at the time of their enrollment. However, if they start a new program of study at a higher education institution in Baden-Württemberg, they will also have to pay tuition fees.

You can find out more on the website of the state of Baden-Württemberg.

How to apply

The application to most study degrees is done via the Online Application Portal. In some cases (e.g. international programmes), special procedures and forms are required. For this reason always follow the instructions for the programme you have chosen; otherwise, your application will most likely not be taken into consideration.

The online application is available during a certain period, in general approx. two months before the application deadline. You do not need to send any original documents or certified copies.

After deadlines close, you can consult the status of your application online. The results will reach you in time to obtain your visa – allow at least two weeks after the application deadline closes.

One more thing: Please refrain from enquiring (on the phone or in any other way) about your status during the admission process. You can log in to the application platform to stay informed. Thank you for your cooperation

Most degree programmes begin twice per year, i.e. in September (winter semester) and March (summer semester). A few programmes begin only once (winter semester).

Application deadlines for degree-seeking students vary according to the selected programme. Please consult the pages of the specific programme.

Important: For applicants from outside the European Union, earlier deadlines frequently apply, i.e. 15 May and 15 November respectively. Make sure that you observe the deadline that applies to the programme of your choice!

Please visit the website of the department to find out all you need to know about how to apply for the BSc in Electrical Engineering (focus on Automation and Industrial Internet of Things / E-Mobility and Autonomous Driving / Power Engineering and Renewable Energies).

Admission requirements degree-seeking students

In Germany, access to studies as a degree-seeking student is strictly regulated by law. Here are the current regulations in brief:

  • To qualify for a bachelor’s degree programme, every applicant needs a higher education entrance qualification (Abitur or equivalent). This school-leaving certification must have been completed in specific subjects that correspond to the intended university degree programme. In some cases, we require university experience for admission to bachelor's degree programmes (see info on school-leaving certificate below).
  • For master's degree programmes, previous studies must qualify you for the focal area chosen.
  • Foreign certificates need to be certified by an appropriate agency.
  • For international programmes, specific requirements apply.

In all cases, you will need to provide proof of sufficient language proficiency in the tuition language(s) for your chosen course.

Important: Some of our degree programmes have admission restrictions known as NC (which means restricted number), e.g. a certain average grade is required for admission.

Go to the DAAD site for further information.

  • Regular programmes: For admission to a regular bachelor's or master's degree programme, either a German school-leaving certificate or the official proof of language proficiency is required by law (see FAQ). If you do not have a German school-leaving certificate (nor a Sprachdiplom II from a Deutsche Schule abroad), you will need official proof of advanced German language proficiency for admission: DSH (2 or 3) and TestDaf (4 in all sections) or telc German C1.
  • International programmes: Special requirements apply for some international programmes, i.e. that applicants either need no previous knowledge of German or B1 level before enrolling. In such cases, the DSH is obligatory to be granted the degree, e.g. students have to pass the language exam before finishing their studies. International programmes taught in English might require a high language proficiency (see the respective prerequisites).

School-leaving certificate

The application process for admission to an undergraduate degree programme is determined by your prior education:

If you have obtained your higher education entrance qualification (HZB) after finishing your secondary education in Germany, you are a Bildungsinländer (you completed your education in Germany) and can apply regardless of your nationality.

Deutsche Schulen outside of Germany that are accredited by the Kultusministerkonferenz and have the full rights to award the German Abitur issue valid higher education entrance qualifications for studying in Germany.

Since the language certificate Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz der Stufe II is equivalent to DSH, no further proof of language is required.

The application can be sent directly to Mannheim University of Applied Sciences.

If you are a German national but have attended a secondary school abroad, you must first apply for recognition of your higher education entrance qualification. Please contact the Regional Council (Regierungspräsidium) in Stuttgart.

Please note: The following does not apply to applicants for the Bachelor Electrical Engineering. Please follow the application instructions on the website of the department.

For all other degree programmes: As an applicant — to Mannheim University of Applied Sciences or any University of Applied Sciences in the state of Baden-Württemberg — with a higher education entrance qualification from a non-German-speaking country, you will need to first contact Studienkolleg Konstanz (Center for International Students) to have your international records validated. If approved, it will issue you a higher education entrance qualification certificate.

If your higher education entrance qualification certificate does not qualify you for direct access to studing at a German university, you will have to pass a test (Feststellungsprüfung) in four areas of knowledge. You can prepare for this test in one of the so-called Studienkolleg centers.

The Studienkolleg Konstanz also checks whether your command of German is sufficient to attend a course with German as the tuition language.

APS certificate

Applicants from China, India, Mongolia and Vietnam need to submit a certificate from the Akademische Prüfstelle (APS) at the respective German embassy (original document only).
The embassies have a special department that examines certificates for their authenticity. If the certificates prove to be genuine, the visa processing time may be reduced.
