In Germany – unlike in many other countries – different Student Services are bundled together at the Studierendenwerk. Their aim is to make life easier for students.
Students become compulsory members by paying their contribution when they enrol.
The main service areas are in catering (the different student canteens), in student housing (19 halls of residence with some 3,150 accommodation units in rooms and flats) and in funding - (BAföG with approx. EUR 10 million per year).
Studierendenwerk Mannheim also provide general social counselling, a large nursery and other social institutions.
